I've waited a long time to comment on this whole mess about Alberto Gonzales' involvement in the firing of eight U.S. attorneys. All presidents have the right to appoint and unappoint their own set of U.S. attorneys, and these people all know they serve "at the pleasure of the president" which is code for "political appointee." When a new president is elected, political appointees typically offer their resignation as a matter of course. I'm sure none of these appointees, who were mostly Republicans, believed their jobs were in jeopardy. The real problem in this situation is Gonzales himself.
Gonzales was President Bush's personal attorney before he was appointed Attorney General. He's just another one of Bush's lackeys. Bush has always surrounded himself with "yes people" so that he doesn't ever have to step outside the bubble he's living in. Increasingly isolated through his presidency, Bush is now on a power-grab spree of unprecedented proportions. He is desperate for any credibility he can possibly retain. But it's too late.
Bush should appoint an attorney general who will not enable Bush's power trip and will uphold the constitution of the United States.
