I was listening to a story on NPR about Rudy Giuliani's controversial stance on abortion. I happen to agree with him. Abortion itself is not a desirable result of any pregnancy. However, Giuliani is sensible enough to know that women should be trusted to make that decision on their own, without government interference.
Rudy was visiting the ultra-conservative "buckle of the bible belt," South Carolina. Many of the social conservatives at the event surprised even themselves that they were considering supporting Giuliani despite his socially liberal views. He is pro gay rights, pro choice and pro gun control which puts him way to the left of all of his republican counterparts running for president. So far, his supporters point to his leadership of New York City during 911 as his number-one credential to be president.
I think Giuliani did a remarkable job during 911 under very difficult circumstances, but he also had a lot of support from the rest of the nation. So, I'm not sure how much of it was him, and how much was having the support of our mighty nation buoying him up.
So, if I were a republican, and thank God I'm not, I would look a little deeper and take into account his full record. As former president George HW Bush used to say, "If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, then it's probably a duck." Rudy looks like a democratic duck to me.
