Last week, Pope Benedict went on record saying that he did not believe in the "theory" of evolution. This seems to contradict the 1996 statement by Pope John Paul II that evolution was "more than a theory." So much for the infalibility of the Pope.
Benedict essentially stated that he believes "intelligent design,"....essentially the biblical creation story cloaked in more contorted language.
I remember hearing liberal priests in my diocese pointing to John Paul II's original statement as proof that the church may be ass-backwards on nearly every social issue in the book, but at least they acknowledge that Adam and Eve couldn't have been the first people on Earth.
The Catholic Church is simply excelerating it's own demise, especially in the United States and Europe. Most educated people believe in evolution, because there is overwhelming scientific evidence to back it up.
This is one reason out of many that I simply think the Catholic Church is ridiculous. And wrong.
